Conservation

E.Thomas (2018), stages of conservation of a Roman vessel at the British Museum

I am a freelance Ceramics and Glass Conservator with experience in both museums and the private sector. The bulk of my freelance work is from the antiques trade. I deal mainly with 17th-19thC porcelain but also cloisonné, enamelware and other related materials. Restoration includes the cleaning, bonding, filling, modeling of missing sections, and retouching/gilding of fills with conservation grade materials.

I have worked for the British Museum, Science and Industry Museum and Birmingham Museums Trust and have experience with: condition surveys; condition and conservation report writing; project work; exhibitions and decants; facilitating public engagement with collections and the conservation process; managing volunteers, collections care assistants and contractors.

I hold a Graduate Diploma in Ceramic Conservation and a Masters in Conservation Studies (Ceramics and Related Materials) from West Dean College where I was awarded the BADA Harold Davies prize for excellence in practical skills as well as strong academic performance. My undergraduate degree was in Fine Art from the University of Leeds.

For estimates, please email with clear photographs of the object(s). Detail images of the damage and a ruler for scale are also helpful.
