Kintsugi is the Japanese technique of ceramic repair using urushi lacquer and gold powder. The word "kintsugi" is a compound word combining the Japanese words for "gold" () and “joinery”(継ぎ).

Kintsugi repair has emerged from the Zen philosophy of wabisabi. That is the appreciation of impermanence, fragility and modesty. The tea ceremony was introduced by Zen monks as a means to achieve enlightenment. Tea ware was precious and so when cups became chipped or cracked, they were repaired with urushi lacquer and finished with gold to highlight the objects fragility and celebrate its imperfections.

Urushi tree lacquer is very strong when set and has anti-bacterial properties. It is traditionally coloured red and finished with gold powder which creates a beautiful, visible repair.
